Description

You are invited to visit us in South Africa!

In the last five years, Ncazelo Ncube-Mlilo (Phola International) has been providing training for mental health practitioners around the world on the Tree of Life and other culturally sensitive narrative practice methodologies. To date, our training has reached over 5000 mental health practitioners worldwide.

Phola is now offering an extension program to the training that we provide. This offering seeks to provide practitioners around the world with an opportunity to visit us here in Johannesburg, South Africa to have a practical experiential learning opportunity through visits to Phola Narrative practice and Imbeleko-based projects undertaken in low-income communities.

We are creating this “School without walls” initiative to give mental health and psychosocial practitioners who use or are interested in the Tree of Life and other culturally sensitive methodologies an opportunity to experience this work in its native land. This will provide an opportunity for cross-cultural learning and exchange and a chance to see the impact of narrative-based community projects on the lives of children, women, men, families, and communities. Home visits to some of the people who have experienced Phola’s interventions will also be undertaken. Visitors will have an opportunity to interact with over sixty (60+) of Phola’s vibrant and committed community narrative practitioners and hear about the joys of their work, and how they respond to the challenges and dilemmas they face. After each day’s activities a sundowner debriefing interaction will be hosted by Ncazelo Ncube Mlilo.

To further understand the cultural and historical contexts shaping the hardships Phola is responding to, opportunities for excursions will be provided at cost and will include visits to Nelson Mandela’s House in Soweto, Hector Peterson Museum, Apartheid Museum, and other tourist sites.

Funds raised through this initiative will go towards supporting Phola’s community project in South Africa.
